What To Look For When Purchasing A New Mattress
Choosing the right mattress for you can be a confusing task. There are so many mattresses on the market, all made from different materials and constructed differently. So how do you know which mattress is best for you? Below we will highlight some of the mattress features that you should take into consideration when purchasing a new mattress.
1. Don’t Always Choose The Popular Mattress
Just because a mattress is popular and has amazing reviews, doesn’t mean that this is the best mattress for you. Everyone sleeps different and is built different.
2. Put Comfort First
When looking at mattresses, you want to highly consider your own comfort level. Do you like soft, firm, in between? You could buy the most expensive mattress ever made and it may not suit your comfort level. You always want to consider the size of the mattress that will fit your needs, the comfort/soft/firm level of the mattress and the type of materials used to construct the mattress.
3. Adjustable Beds Are Sometimes A Safer Choice
While adjustable air beds are quite expensive, they are often a decent choice if you are unable to try out a bed first hand prior to buying. An adjustable bed will allow you to set your own comfort level via a remote control.
4. A Firm Mattress Is Not Always Better For you
While the firmness of a mattress is incredibly important as it helps properly support your spine and other parts of your body, too much firmness can put too much pressure on pressure points in the body – causing unwanted aches and pains. A mattress that is too firm can also stop the spine from maintaining its natural curve while you sleep.
5. Read The Reviews
Reading reviews from real people that either own a particular mattress or reviews from those who have tested a particular mattress – can go a long way in making a proper mattress purchase decision. These reviews often give the reader a more practical look at the mattress and how it sleeps.
6. You Don’t Always Need Metal Coils
Metal coils are typically used in the support layer of a mattress and while these coil support layers are wildly popular and common in mattresses, they are not always necessary in regards to providing proper body support. Inner spring mattresses are prone to sagging, squeaking and can often be bouncy.
7. Natural Latex Is Worth Checking Out
Natural latex mattresses have become wildly popular over the last decade and for good reason. Natural latex mattresses offer great support and often times sleep very cool. This means that the latex will not trap in body heat.
8. Waterbeds Are A Thing Of The Past
While waterbeds are still available on the mattress market, they are not for everyone. While they do provide decent support for the body, some people can often feel dizzy or ‘seasick’ while sleeping on them.
9. Name Brands Do Have Value
There is something to be said about purchasing a mattress from a name brand company. Oftentimes, these companies invest millions upon millions of dollars in conducting research and trial and error in regards to mattress construction. These brand name companies are also trusted and have a proven track record in producing high quality products.
10. Hybrid Beds Should Be Considered
If you are looking to take advantage of the benefits from different materials in your mattress, than hybrid mattresses may be a good option for you. Many hybrid mattresses offer a memory foam, gel foam, latex and coil innerspring foundation combination. While not all those materials are not typically found in one single mattress, hybrid mattresses offer a combination of the four.
11. Warranty & Sleep Trials
Warranty and sleep trials offered by a mattress company is something you should seriously consider when purchasing a mattress. A mattress that offers a sleep trial gives the purchaser a good time frame to try the mattress out and make sure that it is a good fit for them. Try to purchases a mattress with at least a 10-year warranty.
12. Take Your Time
Choosing the right mattress is a big step – this is a product that you will be using for 1/3 of your entire life. So don’t take the mattress buying process lightly.
